Water Level Fluctuations in the Middle and Late Holocene in the Curonian Lagoon, Southeastern Baltic: Results of the Macrofossil and Phytolith Analyses

This paper presents the results of a study on fluctuations in water level Curonian Lagoon (in Baltic Sea). To date, genesis this inland bay as part complex postglacial development southeastern is poorly understood. The data from lithological, geochronological, and phytolith analyses, well assessments plant animal macroremains lagoonal sediments, provide reconstruction local coastal biocenoses dynamics Middle Late Holocene time. reveals fairly dynamic evolution zone over past 7000 years, indicated by traced succession communities forest to near-shore, open-water alternations drying out inundation area under consideration. Thus far, connection with two stages Sea has been traced: regressional stage, which took place approximately 5600 cal years BP, Subatlantic transgression, started at 1100 BP. demonstrates that (microbiomorphic) analysis promising method for temperate-latitude providing information not only communities, but also changes hydrological regime area.
